The Story of Hop
First brewed for the Farnham Beerex in Easter 1993, we didn’t know what to call it, so named it …Specialâ€. It proved very popular so we had to think of a proper name. It was renamed Hop Garden Gold in honour of the many hop gardens that used to be found in the fields surrounding the brewery and which gave Farnham its reputation as the pre-eminent area for growing hops until the middle of the 19th century. We still use fresh Fuggles hops from Puttenham, the only hop garden in the area to survive from the last century.
In 2002, a new young brewer, Matt Purdey, brewed his first brew of Hop Garden Gold, which went on to win Bronze in its class in the Great British Beer Festival. Matt went up to accept the award but at the age of 17 he wasn’t allowed to drink his own beer!
