TEA Total pubs: The Duke of Sussex, Waterloo

With one Duke of Sussex embroiled in a bit of a family feud, we thought we'd write a profile about a pub with a similar namesake which is causing a bit less of a stir....

The Duke of Sussex is a stone's throw away from Waterloo so makes it a fantastic meeting spot or the perfect place to wait for your delayed train! It is warm and welcoming with an open fire, comfortable seating and a private dining room upstairs. Outside the Duke you’ll find one of the best beer gardens in Waterloo, perfect for an after work drink al fresco whilst the leafy garden has plenty of seating and is covered with heaters and lanterns for the winter months.

It was opened as a traditional corner pub, by A E Sewell in 1924 for Truman, Hanbury & Buxton & Co. Ltd, with a beautiful tiled fascia which they still have today. Despite being next to such a busy terminus, The Duke has always kept a local community pub feel. They ran regular pub outings for their drinkers including one in 1984 to visit the Hop Gardens of Paddock Wood - hopefully we can organise something similar later this year to visit our garden!

They run a weekly Monday night quiz which is extremely popular with their locals. Cask Ale remains popular there despite a big boost in kegged ales in recent years - possibly because of their excellent fork handle handpulls! Our TEA and Hazy Hog flys out so we are delighted to have them signed up to the TEA Total campaign.
